Why High-Quality PPE Matters When You’re Welding

Admittedly, PPE isn’t the most exciting part of the job. But it is a necessity.

Long hours in hot conditions. Jackets that ride up or have too much material. Gloves that give no feeling whatsoever. Trousers that don’t quite fit properly.

Done wrong, PPE can become a cumbersome nuisance.

Done right, PPE should be something you barely even think about.

Most importantly, it can be the difference between a good weld and dealing with an injury that could have been avoided.

Welding doesn’t give many second chances

Welding is one of those jobs where hazards can come at you from all directions.

There’s intense heat, sparks and spatter, sharp edges, UV and infrared radiation, fumes and hot metal. Then add awkward working positions, overhead welding, grinding, cutting, and all the usual workshop hazards.

Some of the problems are obvious. Others not so much.

Sweaty clothing. Sore hands or rubbing from a badly fitting glove. A jacket that’s starting to wear in the places. Trousers that chafe.

None of these things necessarily stop you in your tracks, but after a full day in the workshop, they can make a tough job an awful lot harder.

Comfort really does matter. If your trousers are digging in, your jacket is restricting your movement, or your gloves are making it difficult to feel what you’re doing, you’ll adjust them, loosen them. You might even be tempted to take them off…
