Five Tips for Staying Safe While Welding
When you’re adding the final touches to a project or getting stuck into a big welding job, staying safe is extremely important. Your safety should always come first, and you’re in charge of making sure it does. Skipping safety steps can lead to serious injuries, time off work, or even long-term problems.
We’ve spent 35 years helping welders get the tools and supplies they need to work safely and effectively. Many of our team have hands-on welding experience, so we know how important it is to stay safe. Here are five simple tips to help you protect yourself, work better, and improve the quality of what you’re making.
1. Organising the Work Area
Before you start, it’s important to set up your space. Make sure your workshop is tidy and clear of anything that could be a hazard, like things you could trip over, slippery spots or flammable materials. A clean and organised workspace helps keep you safe and ready to work.
- Keep your workbench and the area around it clear.
- If you’re standing for a long time, check that the temperature is comfortable.
- Only bring the tools and supplies you need for the job and place them in easy-to-reach spots. This will stop you from wasting time looking for things and help keep the area clean.
2. Check Your Kit
Before you start welding, make sure all your equipment is in good shape and tested. It’s important to check that everything, from the power source to the welding torch, works properly. This will keep you safe and make sure your equipment meets legal safety standards.
3. Know Your Equipment
This one is really important! If you’re using new equipment, take the time to read the instruction manual carefully. Each piece of equipment is different, and knowing how to use it properly helps avoid accidents, which could result in lost work time, medical expenses, and even permanent disability. Just because you’ve used one machine doesn’t mean all machines are the same. Always take the time to learn how each one works to prevent injuries.
4. Ventilate Your Area
Always make sure your workspace is well-ventilated. Welding creates fumes that can be harmful to you and your colleagues. Make sure you have a fume extractor set up to suck out the fumes. There are many types of fume extractors, and they are easy to use and move around, so there’s no excuse not to have one!
5. Wear the Right Safety Gear
These tips are all important, but none of them will matter if you don’t have the right safety gear. This equipment is not just a formality; it protects you against potential hazards.
- Overalls and Jackets – These protect your body from sparks and heat. They might get hot, but they’re important for staying safe.
- Gloves – There are lots of types of welding gloves, so pick a pair that keeps you safe and helps you do a better job.
- Footwear – Protective boots are important because sparks and metal pieces can fly around, and boots will stop them from burning you.
- Helmet – Welding can produce bright, intense light and heat (called arc flash), so wearing the right helmet is essential. Make sure your helmet has the right filter shade for your job, and consider an auto-darkening helmet for even more ease.
